The other day a group of our yogis spent a great afternoon at a local natural mud pool. It bubbles up in the back of a small property belonging to a local Fijian family half an hour out of Savusavu. Once there we left al our outer clothes and shoes on a bench and gingerly stepped into the pool. It was hot! But perfectly so. The mud is full of slightly rough organic matter so it’s an ideal exfoliant, and as you dig your toes down deeper into the pool you feel the heat increase. So we slopped it over our arms and legs, spread it on our cheeks and foreheads, rubbed it over our shoulders and necks and had a glorious time. The Fijians claim it has all sorts of health giving properties, soothing aching joints and delivering a feel of tranquility and relaxation. Is that true? We all felt pretty good afterwards – not least because we laughed so much and as everyone knows, laughter itself is a great healer.
We plunged into the clear fresh waters of the river adjoining the property to wash off (most of) the mud. Our skins felt fabulous – smooth and silky. Who needs a $200 skin cream when you’ve got that on hand?
Then a snack and we relaxed into the beauty of the surrounding countryside – massive bamboos, cascading vines, huge rain trees and the peace of rural Fiji.
