A week of drawing fearlessly

A week of drawing fearlessly

Lizzie O’Connor describes her week teaching in Fiji:

I arrived at Daku on Saturday 26th May, and our workshops started the next day and continued each morning until our last on Friday 2nd May.  We went and created our drawn images in  a number of locations in and around Daku Resort with its lush, vibrant gardens, and at the beach over the road, in Savu Savu town and finally at the stunningly beautiful and pristine Devodara Beach.  Our last dinner included “show and tell” of all our work done during the week.  This work included drawings in graphite, charcoal, water soluble graphite with the addition of soft pastels and coloured water soluble crayons.  Impossible not to add colour in these locations, it was such a powerful influence on the work.  From the gardens, to the town, to the beach, there was no shortage of subject matter to work from.  Each of the students completed a number of excellent images, in different media which will provide fodder for future work to be developed further once back at home.

Apart from the workshops, Daku Resort was fabulous.  Staff were friendly  and nothing was too much to ask for.  All the meals were fresh, healthy and delicious.  All the bures were clean and very comfortable, and the whole group really loved the extra touches like fresh flowers from the garden in our rooms and at the dinner table.  Daku also organised a number of different afternoon activities such as a visit to a local village Waivunia (think that is the right spelling) where we all got a good insight into local village life, met many lovely people and gorgeous kids, and were part of a welcome ceremony with singing and dancing.  Fabulous.  Two nights with traditional lovo cooking, and much singing and guitar playing which was great.

Can’t wait to get back next year and do it all again, but going to stay longer next time!
Thanks Daku Management and staff for a fabulous week we all loved it.
Below are some of Lizzie’s Fiji sketches: The palm frond is a lm x 75cm painting she did since going home, and the rest are some unfinished or almost finished sketches that she did over there.
